The Amidah
|
Amidah means "standing". It is
said while standing, with one's feet together, facing
Jerusalem.
It is said inaudibly. A low whisper or mumbling is
appropriate. |
1) AVOT - The
Patricarchs
ADONAI, open my
lips that my mouth may tell Your glory.
Blessed are You, ADONAI, our God, and God of our
forefathers,
God of Abraham, God of Isaac, and God of Jacob;
The great, mighty, and awesome God, the supreme God,
Who bestows great kindness, and makes everything,
Who recalls the kindness of the Patriarchs
and brings a Redeemer to their children's children
for His Name's sake with love.
O Helping, Saving, and Shielding King.
Blessed are You, God, Shield of Abraham.
2) GEVOOROT -
God's Might
You are eternally
mighty, ADONAI, the Resurrector of the dead are You;
Great in salvation.
(from Shemini
Atzeret till the first day of Pesach say:)
He makes the wind blow and He makes the rain
descend.
He sustains the
living with kindness, resurrects the dead with great
mercy,
supports the fallen, heals the sick, releases the
confined,
and keeps His faith to those asleep in the dust.
And who is like You, O master of mighty deeds?
and who is comparable to You, O King?
Who causes death and restores life and makes
salvation sprout?
And You are faithful to resurrect the dead.
Blessed are You, ADONAI, who resurrects the dead.
3) K'DUSHAT
HASHEM - Holiness of God's Name
You are holy and
Your name is holy, and every day holy ones will
praise You. Blessed are You, ADONAI, the holy
God.
4) K'HAYOM -
VISHAMRU - Blessing for Shabbat
Moses was pleased
with the gift bestowed on him, for You called him a
faithful servant, You placed a glorious crown on his
head when he stood before Your face on the mountain
of Sinai. He brought down in his hand two
tablets of stone on which were written the command
to observe Shabbat, even as it is written in Your
Torah:
"The children
of Israel shall observe Shabbat, to practice
Shabbat throughout their generations as an
everlasting covenant. It is a sign between
Me and the children of Israel forever, because
in six days ADONAI made the heavens and the
earth and on the seventh day he rested and
refrained from his work."
You did not give
Shabbat, ADONAI our God, to other nations of the
earth.
It is not the heritage of those who serve idols.
Pagans rejoice not in it's rest. To Israel Your
people You gave it in love,
to the descendants of Jacob whom you chose in love.
May the people who set apart the seventh day, all of
them,
be satisfied and delighted with Your goodness.
You favored the seventh day and sanctified it:
the desirable of days You called it, in memory of
Your work of creation.
Our God and God
of our fathers, be pleased with our rest.
Set us apart by Your commandments and grant us to
share in Your Torah.
Satisfy us with Your goodness: make us rejoice in
Your health:
purify our hearts to serve You faithfully.
Grant us, ADONAI our God, in Your love and favor,
Your holy Shabbat as a joyous inheritance.
And in it may Israel rest, those who sanctify your
name.
Blessed are You, ADONAI, who sanctifies Shabbat.
5) AVODAH -
Temple Service
May our eyes
behold Your return to Zion in compassion.
Blessed are You, ADONAI, Who restores His presence
to Zion
6) MODIM -
Thanksgiving
We thank You, for
You are ADONAI, our God
and the God of our forefathers forever and ever.
The rock of our lives and the shield of our
salvation,
You are in every generation.
We shall thank You and tell Your glory for our lives
which are in Your hands,
and for our souls that are entrusted to You,
and for Your miracles that are with us every day,
and for Your wonders and favors that happen all the
time,
evening and morning and noon.
The Good One, for Your compassions were not
exhausted,
and the Compassionate One, for Your merciful deeds
have not ended,
always have we put our hope in You.
For all these,
may Your name be blessed and exalted,
our King, always forever and ever;
